Saturday January 15, 2005

As part of an introduction to Spain, I went with the entire Spanish program here on a short bus tour of Valencia and then spent the afternoon climbing to the top of an old castle located in a town 45 minutes away from Valencia called Xàtiva. We made our way through tiny streets to the mountain road up to the castle. Upon making it to the castle we all sat on the steps and ate our “bocadillos” which are the equivalent of sandwiches for bag lunches. I was given ham and cheese on half a French baguette and then Italian sausage and something like tomato sauce on the other half. The “agua con gas” included in my lunch was quite the surprise since I wasn’t expecting the “gas” and all my friends got “agua sin gas.” J

As you can see in the pictures the castle is pretty basic and was built for defensive purposes. From the highest point you can look out over the valley and see that all the other mountains in the area have their own defensive castles. I’ve also included a picture of me finally wearing a different pair of clothes (my roommates’ & her
shoes which were a size too small, but beggars can't be choosers) because it wasn’t until the next day, day 4 when the airline finally delivered my clothes. Yeah I was that girl who never changed her clothes . . .
