Thailand 2005: Day Thirteen

Friday – I fly tonight. So it’s disappointing that I wake up to discover that it’s already 12pm. Coffee and cigarettes, then it’s time to frantically run around buying souvenirs, postcards, and all of the last-minute things I should have done a week ago.
We take a late lunch at 94c – the café where we had breakfast on the first day, and it’s nice to bring the whole trip full circle. Once again, I’ve been astonished by how well Martin and I have got on. We were always close friends at school, but when he went on to college and university, I stayed behind to find my own path in life. We drifted apart over the following years, and didn’t really managed to get together for another social occasion until my 24th birthday – eight years after we left school.
So it’s been incredible to spend another two weeks almost joined at the hip without irritating the hell out of each other! Of course we’ve had time apart, and it’s great that I can call the likes of Lois Ann, Ben and Nang my friends, rather than merely Martin’s friends. Mind you, everyone seems so genuinely friendly in this part of the world that the same can perhaps even be said of Massaya, Ying, Fight and A, and even Jim and Milo, when in actuality we hardly know each other.
I suppose though, that when I do arrive for two weeks of lazy holidays, Martin is fortunate that he can join in not only the schedule and locations, but the mentality too – he gets to come on holiday with me without even leaving his house! Anyway, I tell him how much I appreciate his hospitality, and we return to the house to pack my things. A brief moment of panic when I can’t find my digital camera, containing all my photos of the trip, but it turns out I’ve already packed it safely in my case, underneath almost everything else.
All that’s left is to say our goodbyes, and to jump in a taxi to the airport.
Ah yes, the taxi to the airport.
