Thailand 2004: Day Eight

Sunday - a lazy day today. Martin was teaching again until around 4pm, and I spent most of that time in bed. Later on I got a taxi, on my own, into central Bangkok, did a spot of the usual tourist stuff, and met Martin for some food after he finished work - I was rather proud of myself.
We had a very late lunch in Gulliver’s Tavern, off Sukhumvit - hamburger and fries, washed down with a nice cold bottle of Carlsberg. I should be ashamed of such a western meal, but I’ve been craving this for days!
Much of Sukhumvit Road was closed to traffic for some kind of fashion parade/carnival – obviously not very interesting to we scruffy westerners. We got the sky train to a quieter area of the city, avoiding the traffic, and got a taxi back to the village from there.
Then a nice lazy evening in Martin’s village, catching up on my book and listening to some tunes on the iPod. Later on Martin and I go for a bike ride around the lakes again. Nang and Ben come over to the village for dinner, and we stuff ourselves with pizza and pasta in an Italian restaurant. It’s actually very nice indeed, and we decide we’ll definitely come back.
Then it’s back to the house - Martin and I are exhausted, but Ben’s appetite for western conversation is apparently insatiable! We sit up for hours talking about anthropology, literature, and probably everything else. Somehow we also manage to plan meeting up again tomorrow for Nang’s birthday. Dinner for six at Oishi is the plan - Martin and I, Ben and Nang, and two of Nang’s female Thai friends, Fight and A. I can’t help raising my eyebrows at their names, although I’ve heard some even more surprising ones since!
