Jet lag well and truly overcome, I woke up at 2pm today. I would probably have slept for even longer, but Martin woke me up by knocking on the bedroom door: “I thought I’d make sure you weren’t dead”. Such a thoughtful host. Still, at least there haven’t been any “Gay” jokes yet.
We called Sue, and cycled to a great steak restaurant by the for lunch. Martin tells Sue about the previous night’s adventures. She finds the “Gay” story amusing. Sigh.
Lunch was great - we had some barbeque beef, brought to the table on sizzling pans and some Chinese-style beef jerky.
One of the waiters at the restaurant was nonchalantly wearing an Osama bin Laden t-shirt. I don’t know whether this was a case of lost cultural references, or whether he really was some kind of al-Qaeda supporter. Martin suspects that it’s more of an anti-Bush statement than a pro-terrorist one, but it’s still a pretty unsettling experience.
Sue cycled home, but Martin and I cycled on to a coffee shop/cafe, called “Coffee or Tea?”. It is the most surreally-shaped building I have ever seen - it seems to have been built by a variety of builders, each with their own style, and no blueprints. We order strawberry milkshakes. They taste almost, but not quite, entirely unlike strawberry milkshakes. We drink them anyway.
We go off on a long bike ride around parts of the village I haven’t seen yet - another lake, some oddly American-looking suburbs, and some absurdly steep hills. We cycle round to Sue’s to take a look at her computer, which has been behaving badly, but she’s gone out.
We start to cycle back to Martin’s, and I remind him that my front tyre is a little flat. So we take a detour by the bicycle repair man’s place. This basically consists of a suburban house, in the driveway of which a middle-aged Thai gentleman hand-pumps our tyres. For this service, we pay him 10 baht. About 16p - or 25c, to any Americans
