Monday morning – I wake up at 6.10am, wide awake. Martin must still be asleep. I decide to begin re-reading The End Of The World News by Anthony Burgess. About ten minutes later I’m asleep again.

Martin comes in to wake me just after 12pm. Today we will explore the village. We pretty much cycled from one end of the village to the other, and I’m really not sure why it’s classified as a village - it’s much larger than my home town.

We visit a few shops, cycle around some beautiful lakes, and eat at a restaurant on the shore of the largest lake. Some cold sausage meat salad, some garlic fried prawns, and some beef in sauce and rice. I have no idea how the locals manage to stay so thin.

Then another cycle ride to the bank, where I discover that my cash card works fine, which is a relief. Then back to Martin’s to drop the shopping off, and out again to the pool.

It’s the first time I’ve been swimming in ages - since I was in Tenerife in September 2001, in fact. We pretty much have the (very nice outdoor) pool to ourselves, and the cool water is just what I need in the sweltering heat. Martin reminds me that this is actually a relatively cold day. I don’t think I would cope very well with summer out here…

We pick up some snacks on the way home, and bump into Martin’s friend Sue, a New Zealander who also lives in the village. The three of us go for dinner together - the beef and noodle soup, with drinks, costs us about 21p each in a little cafe. I feel guilty.

All back to Martin’s for a few beers and chat. Thai beer is dangerous, in that it is at least 6% alcohol, but really doesn’t taste like it. Two beers here will get you as drunk as 3-4 beers back home before you realise it. Martin went to the office to work all night, I went to bed.

I must have cycled for miles, but yet I feel like I had a very lazy day…
