Rome 2004: Day Three

We traipse the streets of Rome once more, but I’m in a world of my own, wondering while we wander. We explore the Pantheon, numerous ruins, fountains, and lose ourselves in the search for an electrical shop. At one point I manage to read the map so badly that we head in the opposite direction until Lois corrects us. My head’s been in the clouds all day, wondering “what if”, and “how about”, and all the rest of it…
We head up to the Cappuccini Monastery - the birthplace of Cappuccino, and home to the Cappuccini monks, who have decorated their crypt with the bones of their deceased brethren for centuries. A little morbid, maybe even gruesome, but it sounds fascinating. Sadly we discover that the monastery is closed for refurbishments for the next few months, and now I’m just fed up.
We get back to the hotel, she decides to sleep for a while, and I realise I’ve hardly spoken to her all day. I need to snap out of it and just enjoy the holiday! Originally, we were going to see the Vatican today, then have a “solo” day on Friday, for us each to spend some time alone. Now we’ve missed the Vatican, and since it’s not open for as long over the weekend, our choice is between either seeing the Vatican tomorrow, and spending the day together, or leaving it until next week. We both agree to wait. I think we each need our solitude, and time to reflect. It’s a shame that I’ve been doing this anyway today when I was supposed to be providing sparkling company!
Later we go out for pizza and pick up a bottle of wine, which we drink as we settle into what seems to have already become our evening routine - talking and laughing into the small hours.
