Bakt potet

We fly to Schiphol early in the morning. As we take our places in the plane to Bergen and wait to take off, we see an angry-looking man arriving with the passengers luggage. One of the boxes says "fragile" in several languages. The man does not gently lift and deposit the luggage, but throws everything with great force into the plane. We watch him incredulously until he catches us looking at him. We are thankful that at least one of our suitcases is a Samsonite.



The KLM flight assistant has learned French by correspondence. Her "bonne journée" sounds like "beaujolais".



We arrive in Bergen; our suitcases don't. No heavy luggage means we can walk to Kloster Pension from the bus stop. It rains and we have no umbrellas. We walk past Bryggen, the old harbour, and then return to our guesthouse as we are tired from the long journey.



In the evening we go to restaurant "Dickens" to sample the baked potato or "bakt potet" as the locals call it.



Our suitcases arrive the following morning. It is a lovely sunny day, perfect for a tour in the cable car to the top of mount Fløyen, one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen.



There is a queue of people wanting to go on the cable car. The cable cars are interconnected: while the blue car goes up, the red car goes down. In the restaurant on the top of the mountain we have shrimp sandwiches for lunch. We walk around and admire the view from the top.



The shops are open until Midnight and we browse around in the bookshops and look at the pricey Norwegian knitwear. No self-respecting modern Norwegian would be seen dead in one but the tourists love them.



On Friday, we explore the green and leafy area around our Pension, near the Bergen aquarium. Both of us have some problems adapting to the food and we stick to a big pot of cloudberry yoghurt for supper.
