After two weeks in Provence and Languedoc, we returned home to Belgium and on our way we passed through Champagne country.
Daniel had an uncle of an uncle in Epernay who made exquisite champagne under his own name (Joseph D'Hondt).
It was the first day of harvest when we arrived in Epernay. Loads of grapes arrived in small pickup trucks, and were tested by Joseph on sugar content and quality.
The fruit was pressed and the juice stored in enormous steel containers, to macerate before being bottled.
As we were "family", we could walk around the premises freely and watch the process of champagne making in every detail. Joseph's wife offered us a glass of last year's "Cuvée d'Or" which we gladly accepted. We bought a few cases to take home with us.
It was a wet, dark day. We spent the evening in a small hotel in Epernay and had dinner in the restaurant downstairs.
