The last time I can remember lying down under a tree enjoying a bit of sunshine was last year in Norway.

we have collected our suitcases from the lockers, a bus takes us over the mountains and ravines, in all 65 hairpin bends, to our Hotel Jardin Tecina.

Our room is not ready yet so we head straight for the bar. An hour later, we are given the key to habitacion 31.

After lunch, we go for a walk into the village. When we get back, my shoulders are burned in spite of Nivea sun factor 20, it is that hot. We spend the afternoon cooling off by and in one of the pools.

After breakfast on Sunday - Easter - we go for a long walk in the mountains. We come across a couple of goats in dire need of milking, and walk along Fred Olsen's banana plantation. Jack's mom has often told the story of how in the old days she used to live near banana trees and how there were snakes in the banana trees, and how people kept chickens to frighten off the snakes.

The Sunsnacks info brochure tells us that there are no snakes on La Gomera, but there are poisonous spiders in the banana plantations. All we see is lots of little lizzards, soaking up the hot sun on the rocks. There are also lots of birds everywhere, small and slender sparrows, doves and blackbirds, but no yellow canaries or other exotica.

We have paella for lunch to remind ourselves what a crappy dish it really is. Most of the afternoon we spend lazing by the pool, swimming and studying.

On Monday it is ideal weather for walking. We go a bit further along the rocky coastline now, for a swim maybe or just to dip our toes into the sea water. The pebbles hurt our feet and the sea is rather rough that day.

In the evening we go for a long walk along the beautiful Jacaranda trees in full bloom.
