Wonderful wonderful Copenhagen, as the song goes. Hans Christian Andersen's statue looks down upon the city from a high pillar. He always was a distant type.
A Danish colleague had booked us a room in Hotel Kong Arthur at a very reasonable price. It was very central and we could easily walk everywhere.
There were roadworks going on in the center, which spoilt the view a bit.
We climbed inside the Round Tower up the spiral stairs and enjoyed the view from the top. Tivoli Gardens was closed, so we went to the Museum of Erotica instead.
We had our evening meals in the "new" (320 year old) harbour, Nyhavn. The restaurants were not cheap, but it was a very nice area and we could see the ships from where we were sitting. Fish was of course prominent on the menu. Especially memorable were the fish cakes they seemed to have everywhere.
The Little Mermaid sat all alone on her rock on the Langelinie, small and sad. It was bitterly cold the day we paid her a visit. We could have done with a warming drink - but this was not Belgium, where there is a café on every street corner.
We watched the Changing of the Guard in Amalienborg, where the King and Queen live, and followed the guards to Rosenburg. The Guards are dressed exactly like the ones in London. They walk in military style and stop before the red traffic lights, which we thought was extremely disciplined of them.
The airport was full of reminders of famous Danish writer Karen Blixen, forever now associated with Meryl Streep's overacting. I haahd aaah faaahrm in Aaaahfricaaaah.
