Throughout the night, the train rolls on. It is 8.30 when we pass Munich. There is another girl in the train who is travelling alone. She is an experienced traveller, I am not, not yet.



We pass "Station Grosskarolingenfeld". Is this still Germany? Great to hear the language again. The houses we pass are made out of wood. White and dark brown. Geraniums. Antennas on the rooftops. "Roha, alles für das Haus".



Station Rosenheim. Is this still Germany ? Lots of trains still marked DB, so it must be.



9.10 and the houses look definitely Austrian now. All wood and flowery balconies, like on the postcards. I circle a few things on the map of the city that I want to see. Not too much. I have some thinking to do. On my left side I see mountains. On the right side a wood, and a rabbit hopping down the slope. This is no longer Germany. When did we pass the border?



The train arrives in Salzburg. I walk to the centre on foot, it is not far. First on the list is the Barockmuseum. Art is always a consolation. These are mostly small paintings and sketches. Amazing how well these painters did their try-outs. Not just simple sketches, but works of art in themselves, very detailed.





I have goulash soup for lunch and go for a walk in the town afterwards.



A Yugoslav offers me a cup a coffee, tells me his life story and how he misses his family back home and asks me if I want to take his picture. A proof of his existence. In 1990 Yugoslavs still exist. I drink my coffee, take a picture of him and wander on.



The Sonderausstellung in Mozart's birthplace is good, original and funny. I have a glass of apple juice on the Alter Markt in café Tomasselli. The shops are disappointing: everything is closed on Saturday and most of the goods are covered in revolting Edelweißblüten.
