we were sailing along and my driver said, "watch this." Just when I was going to ask him what he was talking about, he moved out of the fast lane. He looked in my direction to see my expression at what was about to happen. Just then a Model 6 Mercedes passed us at what he estimated to be over 180 MPH. "That my friend is what $180,000, and a 12 cylinder/500 horsepower engine will do for you over here." I sat dumb founded as it slowly disappeared over the horizon and was gone. DynCorp has facilities all over Europe where we perform Phase Maintenance of the 7th Armies Flying Arsenal in support NATO. Many of the helicopters were heading for Kosovo where I had just come from. I was proud to be a part of what the UN and NATO are doing, but it seemed such a waste given the political environment of the Balkan region. At seven PM one night, we met at a Yugoslavian Restaurant for a superb meal consisting of Escargot, Pepper Pork with white asparagus, and garlic vegetables. However the highlight of the evening was when ten older ladies ranging from age 72 to 83 walked in, dressed in bright German clothing. I asked one of the wives if it would be alright if I were to tell them how lovely they looked. She said that it might make them feel uncomfortable for a total stranger to tell them this. So I regretfully declined from doing so, but she could tell I still wanted to say it. However, as I was walking out, she told them what I had said about them anyway. Just as I was getting to the door, they said, "thank you kind sir," in broken English and they giggled like young school-girls. She told me later that, "a woman at any age appreciates a compliment from a man." She hit her husband on the arm and said, "why don't you say nice things to me like that." He gave me a dirty look then we laughed about it the rest of the night. I asked to meet with all of the DynCorp Managers in Frankfurt, and I bought them all lunch at a Bier Garten and we ate Schnitzel (my favorite German food). ...
