without sleep. During the next week, it snowed once and temperatures dipped into the twenties, but for the most part we experienced deep blue skies. The hotel I stayed in was terrific and the hotel staff knows me since I stay at the same place every year and we have become friends. A smile is understood in any language.
Time Piece Made with Love - Each time I travel to Germany I search through shops to find the perfect German grandfather clock. I was starting to believe I would never find it. An employee told me about the Black Forest Heidelberg Clock Factory in a small nearby town. She described their precision, quality, handmade and certified clocks. On Saturday, we tried finding the shop and after getting lost several times, we pulled onto a tiny street with quaint German homes. It looked like a postcard of a small German town you might see at the Frankfurt airport. The shop was situated between homes and a man by the name of "Mister Ed" met us at the door. He methodically showed us his shop, tools and beautiful clocks. I rolled through this managerie of wood, metal, glass and melodic tones with amazement. They were all handmade German Grandfather Clocks that were more like his children than clocks. He took such pride in describing every inch of his grand clocks. When I rounded a corner in this wonderland - there it was. It had hand-carved figurines at the top that spin when it chimed. The wood had carvings of mountains, castles and homes. The glass door was beveled with gold inlays. The weights and other moving parts sparkled and had castle designs. It played four European tunes and the pendulum had a patented breathtaking imprint of four famous German castles. I don't think I found it, I think it found me. It will be shipped to my home by Christmas - please come see it. Mr. Ed will be there in spirit - you'll see his touch in the hand carved pieces he made with love.
