North to Alaska - We flew business class to Seattle and we arrived just in time to see a breath taking sunset over the pacific. We checked into a hotel, slept a few hours, then drove three hours along the coast to Vancouver, Canada. We had time to drive along famous Marine Drive by the ocean surrounded by cliffs, snow covered mountains, blue ocean and tall green trees. After arriving at our cruise ship, we were escorted to our stateroom on the Promenade Deck on our Holland America ship (http://www.hollandamerica.com/fivestarfleet/statendam.htm) at 2 PM and set sail at 5. Each night we ate incredible 5-course meals as the sunset over the ocean (it stayed light until almost midnight) followed by on-board shows. Each morning we ate breakfast on the Lido deck where we saw whales swim by the pristine Canadian shoreline. Our cruise ship took the inner waterways, so mountains ascended high above us on either side of the ship. The cool soft breezes woke us on our morning walks around the deck and kept us awake on evening strolls around the deck. Clouds descended around the snow-covered mountains and we could see no signs of civilization for hours at a time. Alaska is truly one of the final frontiers. The mountains proudly stood against the skyline blocking the sun. Tall trees came down to the waterline sometimes in channels so narrow that two cruise ships cannot pass. Sometime during the day we would have "formal teas" with scones, tiny cakes, fruit and chocolate treats. Then we had a full day of games, exploring the many decks and events on our enormous ship. We walked (rolled) for miles around the huge decks, saw great shows and participated in shore/whale/eagle watching. Over a week we traveled from Vancouver to North Alaska close to the Arctic Circle where the sun remained in the sky close to the horizon almost the entire day. It was a beautiful yet rugged land that made me admire the Eskimos for their tenacity. While in Juneau, AK, we rode a tram straight ...
