and government red-tape, I had a hand written ticket to Hong Kong, Switzerland, Macedonia and finally Kosovo. However, I would not learn until later she kept the unused portion of my ticket and I would be stuck in Europe later in the trip w/o a ticket.
A smile makes all the difference - The flight from Manila to Hong Kong was quick and during my layover I ate one of my favorite Asian meals - Soba. It is a soup containing fish, egg, beef, vegetables and chinese noodles - YUM! As I boarded the aircraft in Hong Kong, I smiled at a flight attendant and we became instant friends. As a matter of fact, she moved me to better seating at no additional cost and I was able to get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep - it was wonderful. It was truly an international flight. I was sitting beside a young lady from Germany, a couple from England, a man from Singapore and a Muslim man from the Middle East. We all had a great time getting to know each other and exchanged business cards. The flight was very long and took us over the Philippine Sea, Indonesia, China, Russia, and Eastern Europe. The flight went north of the usual route - the Middle East, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan - for obvious reasons. The fact that I made all of the connections was the first miracle of the trip - God was my co-pilot. Once again, I smiled at the ticket counter in Munich, and I was taken to the Executive Lounge (instead of to the sterile gate area) where I checked my e-mail, drank strong Swiss coffee and got to know a few other travelers from all over the planet. Sitting at a nearby table, I heard a few men complaining. I rolled over and gave them a "pep talk" about what was possible with a positive attitude and it rubbed off on them - soon, they were looking at life positively.
