I cannot believe the summer is half over. I am sure all of my fellow teachers are having the same sad thoughts. I hope this email finds everyone well and a bit sunburned from too many days lazing away on the beach. I manage about one or two days to work on my tan. Other days are spent working with Sam around town managing our various projects, chasing people who are not doing their jobs quickly enough, trying to manage the accounts for the charity (hateful, awful, disgusting, boring job: sorry to all math teachers, bankers and accountants) and writing proposals and/or updates for the trustees.

only slightly important), and get an IV with an antihistamine and then saline solution. I have the biggest veins of anyone I know in my hands; I would be an excellent candidate to be a heroin addict if I so chose that path. The idiot nurse took two tries to get the needle into my vein. I have never seen the nurses in Sri Lanka do anything other than sit down and chat with each other. The doctor than pronounced that I had to stay overnight. Kate stayed with me in the other bed in the room.
Apparently, that is the custom here. Sam's family came to see me that night at midnight (another Sri Lankan custom if someone is in the hospital), which was a bit weird as I was out of it in bed and they all just stared at me.
Next morning, I was released but the doctor told me that my heartbeat now sounded irregular and sent me to a cardiologist, who after making us wait for four hours, told me that I was now fine and that histamine builds up in tuna after a few days and that is what caused the problems, not an allergy to tuna. Thank god, because I love tuna!! Just thrilled that I did not have something seriously wrong with me.
I am fine now but I think I will stay away from the tuna for a while. After my episode, some people who were over for dinner on Friday said they felt weird that night (not as bad as me though). Also, Sam gave the rest of the tuna to his dogs on Sunday night and came home from the hospital to find that they had thrown up all over the porch. Thank god I did not kill all of the dogs and all of my friends here from my first (and last!) dinner party. The moral of the story: Don't cook. Go out to eat or order out!! (This is my number one rule whilst living in Manhattan)
So I am happy to report that I am still alive and healthy and will be home September 2nd to torture you all with more stories and photos of Sri Lanka. I cannot believe I only have one month left. It will be difficult to leave. But I miss everyone too! And I am dying for a bagel. Tried to explain what a bagel was to Sam. He had never even heard the word before and had no idea what I was talking about. For once, words failed me. How can you explain a hot bagel dripping with cream cheese and butter? Cannot think about it as my stomach is growling right now.
Kate's birthday is on Friday and then she goes home on Sunday. So sad! I cannot believe a year ago we were just starting our trip in South Africa. Sometimes years go by and nothing substantial happens. This year has been a one of those years where everything changes and no one, not even Katherine, could have predicted it.
ok, love and hugs to you all. Hope everyone is happy and healthy and histamine free!
