t's been a good two weeks since I have been to the internet and am finally in a place where the internet actually works, quickly, with no blackouts, shutdowns, and frustrating losing of information. Another bonus: this place is AIR CONDITIONED! Wow, I could almost be home.

Finally pried myself away from Lake Malawi after three full weeks of doing absolutely nothing but go diving, swim to the raft from the hostel, chitchat with fellow travellers, dance under the canopy of the velvet Malawian sky, eat fabulous food, befriend many locals, help a friend who had malaria and was robbed three times whilst in Africa, swim at sunset in water that turned from green to azure to black, watch the golden full moon appear out of the mist, play volleyball on the beach, and paddle around on dugout (local, wooden and made from trees) canoes. So, you can see why I didn't want to leave.

First of all - my goodness, even the Malawians know that George Bush is scary. Everyone, and I mean everyone, has asked me if I voted (did not because to vote absentee ballot you have to know where you will be so they can mail the ballot). The American election is all anyone here is talking about - locals and travellers. We did not hear the final news until Wednesday (time difference) and were listening to the BBC World for almost 24 hours. When George Bush gave his victory speech, an ex-pat Northern Irishmen, who lives in Oregon, and I hugged to console each other and vowed to not go home till after GB's four years are up. Anyway, of course, those are only my views and not the views of, obviously, the majority of Americans. But the most fascinating thing is that the world is watching.... everywhere I have been in Africa people talk about George Bush and with the exception of the racist Africaans whites in South Africa, they do not like him. I bet not one person reading this can tell me the names of the leaders of South Africa or Malawi ...
