I did this walk a few years back, 1998 I think, with me (for most of the way), as usual my hiking buddy Jonathan Davidson, though he hurt his foot and I walked the last 2 days by myself.
The walk
This walk goes mainly though the Lakes, starting at Ulverston, Morecambe Bay, and finishes in the border town Carlisle. We were camping and, yet again, had quiet a lot of gear to carry.
The first day is quiet easy, which was just as well, as it was hot and humid, and I was not exactly in top shap. For the first few hours the path goes manly hrough sheep and cattle fields, scenic but hardly spectacular, and we were making good time. It got prettier once we arrived at Coniston Water, which we followed all the way up to Coniston for the first night's camping.
Day 2 was big for us, form Coniston to Keswick. A short way outside Coniston we stopped at Tarn Hows, a scenic beauty stop, which was quiet busy with tourists. An hour later the walk reaches Great Langdale Beack and the path follows the river up though the valley. This is where it is beginning to get pretty. The road ends, there is nothing around except a few farm houses and a big valley in front. The walking is still easy, until the the valley ends and the route follows a steep path 300 meters up to the mountain top. Pretty steep, but noot for too long, and the views on top are quiet impressive. The next section, turning away from the valley, felt very remote and I was glad the weather was holding up. The path was over boggy ground with many small tarns around, there was nobody else up on the hills around us, a strangly quite place. The scenery stays like this for a good few hours, and it is a long way down before the way reaches Derwent Water and civilisation.
We covered a lot of ground that day, unfortunatley too much for JD, as one of his
