Introduction
I am writing this on November 24th, 2001, more than six years after this trip. I don't think I took any notes, but I still remember quiet a lot about it. Basically, I went off to South East Asia with 3 friends for 2 months during summer holidays at university. It was at the time the longest I had travelled and certainly wetted my appetite for future travels. The guys who travelled with me were:
Jason: I guy form Manchester who I lived with in my 2nd year at University and still see quiet often, Marc, another friend from university who I also still see quiet a lot, James a friend of Jason's who I did not really know before the trip and have not seen for years.
Malaysia
Our first stop was Kuala Lumpur, where my parents were living at the time, in a nice house in Taman Duta. We spent a few days just hanging out, seeing Kuala Lumpur, and making last minute preparations for the trip. We met up with Lian Ne, a friend from university who was living in KL and was back for the summer holidays as well, and took a bus to go to Tioman Island on the west coast. We arrived after an 10 hour overnight bus journey, and had to waste a few hours at the ferry pier before the boat to Tioman Island arrived.
Tioman Island is pretty cool, it was fairly quiet, just a few other travellers and we spent most days hanging out on the beach, going for small jungle walks or taking a boat to some of the smaller islands off shore. The beach and sea are OK, but not as nice as some of the beaches in southern Thailand and not nearly as nice as in Pulau Readang, an island further up on the east coast where I had been the year before. Nevertheless we had a good couple of days before we headed back to KL, to catch a flight to Bangkok.
