Cook Islands

On the plane sat next to a girl who turned out to be the niece of the Prime Minister, nice girl, now married and living in Sydney, the first 'Australian' who did not like her country. I think she was just kind of bored though, looking after her daughter all day as opposed to getting high on some beach in the Cook Islands.

At Rarotonga airport met Phil again and we kind of stayed in touch over the next week. Got a lift to Awarange backpackers, only intended to stay for a few days but ended up staying more than a week, just kind of got stuck as the crowd was pretty good:

There was Stewart, my roommate, young guy from Grantham, at the end of his trip though. He was nice enough, a bit quiet and shy though and pissed me off when he shouted at two locals to get off the road when we were driving back one night.

Peter was on older (59 years) English guy from the Ilse of White, interesting but loved his own voice a bit to much. He found 'his place' on the North of the North Islands somewhere and was planning to start a bus service for tourists in the region.

Joel, and old American arse, full of stereotypes, racists and on one or two occasions I had to control myself not to get seriously pisses off with him. Exactly the kind of guy who gives Americans a bad name abroad. He had a number of valid points but the way he brought some across was not just not really on.

The three English girls, Michelle, from Leeds, and her friends. They were broke, just sitting out the days, reading, going to the beach and generally being bored out of their brains.

Matthew and Katja, an American dude and a pretty German girl who had met travelling a while ago. It took us a while to figure out that they were not a couple, especially after their row the morning they arrived, but they were really cool ...
