are about 8000 locals, all very friendly, traffic is very relaxed, hitch-hiking easy, the beaches beautiful and the beer cheap. The nicest beach is at Muri, on the east coast, but virtually the whole south and east coast is a stretch of nice sandy beaches with palm trees and turquoise sea with lots of corals. A cool place to spend a week, though after a week, as things happened, I decided to leave and go with Katja to Aitutaki, a group of islands about one hours flight from Rarotonga.
Aitutaki
Aitutaki is the kind of place where they make the adds and calendars for the South Pacific. It consists of about a dozen islands in a shallow lagoon, only the 'biggest' one is inhabited by about a thousand locals and a maybe a hundred tourists.
The only problem was that it rained for the whole time we were there, and I mean proper tropical rainstorms kind of rain.
So there was not that much to do really and we just talked a lot, lots and lots, about Germany, relationships, travel, how work sucks and live should be so much more than it usually is… A bit more about Katja then: bit older, early thirties nut keeps very fit; she has been working as an independent financial consultant for the last few years, in Spain and Newcastle recently, earning good money but got fed up with the stressful lifestyle and decided to go travelling for a year. She started off with a girlfriend but they got into a fight early on and so her friend (who does not speak English much) went back home and she continued on her own.
Despite the rain we managed to cycle round the island (with some guy from Tenerife) checked out some of the beaches, and, on the last day went on a tour to the outer islands, swimming, snorkelling, forgetting the passport for the stamp from Foot Island. It was nice, we were almost like a couple, except that we were not, but it was good that way
