RTW 2002/03: South Pacific Islands

and I spent most of my time with them.



Then there were Ross and Sam, two Aussie guys who stayed at the Paradise Inn. Sam really spot on, into his hiking, Ross a complete fitness freak trying to pull anything female & alive, a bit of a sad case really, never figured out why they were best friends.



Last but not least there was the 'leech', a stray dog that kind of belonged to the hostel. The leech loved everybody that fed him, and as I fed him most he was my best buddy. In the end I ended up taking him to the beach for a bath, it took a while (and lots of chocolate) to get him in the water but once he was in he loved it and the bath became a daily routine. Wish I could have taken him with me, but there you go.



The first 2 days I spent cycling round the island, running, swimming and generally trying to get fit and it kind of worked. But after a few days I started going out lots with Katja, Matt, Ross, Sam and Phil, somewhat reducing my sports activities during the day.



We did go for two good walks though, first the cross-the-island-hike, hot, but not too strenuous, then a hike up to the third highest peak, steep, lots of ropes, blisters on hands, but good fun with the right people.



During the evenings? It is kind of strange but there seems to be one happening place each night. So Monday night was RSA, Banana Court on Tuesday, somewhere else on Wednesday, and the Staircase for the Island night on Thursday (local dances, wow, some pretty impressive hip movement from the girls). Highlight I guess was when we went back to the Edgewater from some late drinking, just getting more drunk and watching the stars sitting on the beach, followed by a midnight swim with Katja and Matt that was well worth the soaked wallet and coral cuts.



A bit about the island I guess: it is pretty small, takes about 2 hours by bike to circle it, there are ...
