We took a whirlwind trip of 1,700 kilometers for a weekend visit to friends in Guzet the heart of the French Pyrenees. What a treat!

And for us, what a shame we were only able to spend a day and a half in Guzet on this trip.

It is a bit crazy to drive 850 kilometers in one day - but what fun!

The half-way point was perfect: we had lunch in Vers at La Truite Dorée, a lovely restaurant and hotel.

Cahors Bridge The lunch set menus ranged from 82 to 115 francs - all good value for money.

My partner, Pierre, ordered foie gras and confit de canard. We both tried the 1996 Bergerac Château Montravel white wine - excellent!

I had trout with almonds as a main course and the tarte aux noix dessert, which is a specialty of this restaurant.

A 1990 Château de Chambert, appellation Cahors controlée red was perfect with our main course.

The mountains and snow came later as we wound our way up the final stretch in the dark to Guzet Neige. Our friends greeted us at their chalet and we settled in by a blazing fire.

Riding a quad in Guzet Saturday morning we hiked further up the mountain and enjoyed the vistas of snow covered Pyrenees peaks and the ski area which should open in mid-December.

Then there was lunch and afterwards I got to ride on a quad - a 4-wheel 'buggy' that zips along at an amazing speed!

Sunday dawned with a blue sky and sunshine and what a view of the mountains! Alas, we really did have to be back home by Monday for work.

At lunch time we were in Cahors and chose L'Arapagous restaurant with mouth watering regional specialties.

The assiette de charcuterie and salad with duck, nuts and foie gras were delicious starters.

We followed this by duck cutlette with garlic and magret canard with cèpe mushrooms - excellent!

We shared a delicious bottle of Château Haute Serre 1996 as well.
