The dinner last night seems to have done me no harm , and I am getting no more pains.
The ferry boatmen appear to have decided to take yesterday off and remain on the island, so they are up and ready for us at six, and get their own back on Ken when we are not ready to go on the dot. Ken is still not well, but functioning.
After eggs and toast we pile ourselves and our bags onto the dhow and set off back to the mainland. We are heading into the weather and there is a good chop so we are soon drenched. Poor Blondie has to suffer being soaked and freezing on top of her fear of boats. It takes an hour and three quarters, but she endures it stoically. Chris has her head stuck firmly between her knees, allowing her bum to take the brunt of the weather - at first we think she is ill, but it turns out that she has brought her book to read on the crossing, and she is trying to keep it dry. Meanwhile Ken is trying to light cigarettes between splashes and get the odd drag before the wind smokes them for him. Mark and I sing sea shanties.
Back at Vilanculos we strip off our sodden clothing and stuff it all into plastic bags and set off. (I also have my first solid bowel movement since Beira, which is a cause for celebration)
The road is good, and by 3:30 we reach Chimoio, where, according to Brandt, there is a good hotel built in the form of a windmill. It is not a particularly large town, and eventually we find the Imoinho Motel, which is indeed shaped like a windmill. It is a fantastic place with a well stocked bar, nice rooms, and a beautiful restaurant where we get an excellent steak meal attentively served by helpful uniformed staff.
