Hello All
We left Fez managing to aviod any more 'fines' and headed south in search of the sun.
However, our first stop was actually above the snow line. We hoped to drive the mountaineous Cirque de Jaffar just outside Midelt. Set off full of confidence but within 5km Russell's front end started slipping over the edge of the mountain. A recent snow melt had turned the pass into a mud slide - ALL the recovery gear was pulled out but the rescue involved essentially re-building the road with the help of two Berber boys who came to our rescue. 4 hours later and a LOT of hard work we were finally back on track - minus half a bottle of whiskey and 250 dhs to the lads for their work.
Undeterred the next day we set out from Rich, off piste to the famous Tondra gorge. We went via the Plaine d'Oudlalas to Tiidrine - a really fantastic route through gorges, tiny villages, up mountain passes and across rivers.
Russell was the star of the Tondra Gorge that day - a group of German tourists decided that he was just the thing to set off their photos of the gorge - he was so popular we were even thinking of charging people...'real life antique...very cheap...only 20dhr a photo etc etc'
Spent the next four days off piste travelling the mountain route from Tinerhir to Nekob, across the desert from Zagora to Foum-Zguid, finally ending up in Talioune. Amazing scenery as we travelled through basalt fields, lush palmeries, hairpin mountain passes and desert complete with herds of camels and goats.
After all the bouncing around we needed to give our bums a rest and have spent the last few days in Taghazoute - a tiny village with no running water on the coast. Feasted on freshly caught fish brought round by fishermen in the morning...bliss.
Now heading south to Mauritania - meeting the army convoy on friday for a nice treck through the mine fields...lovely.
We've sent some photos back - hopefully Nicola will get them soon but if Moroccan post is anything like Royal Mail....... .
