We arrived in town quite early and immediately started looking for a hotel that we had heard about. We found it without much trouble and asked for a room. We were offered one at a rate that seemed good but, as none were ready yet, we decided to take it sight unseen. This, of course, was a mistake. We were in a hurry to see the city - we only had one day - and so we gave the desk clerk our passports, dropped our bags in the lobby and headed off to see the sights.
When we returned in the afternoon we were shown our accommodations, which looked fine until we entered the room. With the first step we knew the carpet was wet - not damp mind you, but it made a squishing sound with every step. This was unacceptable: not only was there no place to set our bags but the air was damp from the rug.
Back downstairs the desk clerk offered to switch us to the only other available room. Although this one had a dry carpet, we noticed it was full of mosquitoes. They were flying around and around looking for a meal, no doubt. My traveling companion was allergic to insect bites so we immediately rejected this room too. The clerk, who had accompanied us this time, said there were no other rooms available: take the one with a wet carpet or the one full of blood sucking insects - no thanks. We asked for our passports back but the clerk said we would have to see the manager for that.
In the lobby we found the manager smoking with some of his friends. He was a big, middle aged man with large mustache and a gruff manner. He came over and told us through the clerk that we would need to pay half a days rent - he had, after all, held the room for us all day. His news didn't sit very well with me and I told him that it was still early and he would surely be able to rent the room. He wasn't happy either and we started arguing through the clerk. I told the manager that neither room was habitable and he told me that I couldn't reserve
