At the very southern end of Laos you come across the amazing thousand islands in the Mekong delta river system - particularly Don Det island.

Mekong Delta - Don Det island
Leaving Champasak early, we caught the barge back over the Mekong river and jumped on an open aired bus for the 2 hour trip down south to Bang Muang and the boat to Don Det island.
Stepping off onto the sandy beach, we trudged up the dirt track along the waters edge until we found a bungalow that looked the most comfortable. For $1 a night you enjoy a comfy but Spartan pole hut on the edge of the river.. no electricity or running water. Quite a nice change actually.

Waterfall walks
Once the intense heat and sandflys had dissipated enough, we set off on a nice long walk to see some big waterfalls/cascades on a nearby island (Don Khon).
We made it just as the sun began to dip over the violent cascades and jagged rocks.. a no-swim area where a backpacker drowned in 2003.

Cycling, sore arses and freshwater dolphins
Following the 'old train tracks' from Don Det, we were soon at the river organising a boat. For 30,000Kip (+5,000 for the Cambodian police) we were taken across to the Cambodian side of the river and managed to see quite a few pods of freshwater dolphins... finally a reward for our efforts.
