Coming to Bangkok for a suit, you will be surprised how the place has taken over Hongkong for tailoring. Many catering to foreign visitors who have discovered that the city has dethroned such Asian tailoring capitals as Hong Kong in value for money.
With over 100 Tailors shops in Bangkok it was rather hard to choose the right one while staying in Bangkok.
Tailors in the west will only tailor clothes for you from fabric that you purchased from them. In the east some tailors would accept fabrics. It is recommended you buy the whole suit from your tailor including the fabric.
You must ask them to recommend something that they would say would tailor nicely, not just blindly get the highest count that you can afford.
Get a wool suit while in Bangkok. Wool generally makes a good suit. It drapes nicely, tailors well and looks formal and nice. Contrary to popular belief, light weight wool is even good for the summer and in most cases better than polyester blended fabrics.
not knowing which to pick...
The first and most important rule is do not enter any shop that has a deal that is too good to be true - all those shops selling "2 Cashmere Suits / 2 Silk Shirts etc for USD 150" are all gimmicks. The advertisement are there in the airplane magazines to various types of brochures and Maps available.
DO NOT enter any shops that you are taken to by guides - you get ripped of as the guides get commission. Tuk Tuks and taxis also take you to guide shops - it is better to call the tailor you are interested in yourself and they will recommend you how to get there.
I have used many tailors in Bangkok and have been totally impressed with Excelsior in downtown area. A must visit shop by the delegates and embassy staff in Bangkok.
Their service is outstanding and they treated me and dressed me like a King. I have now made over 10 suits and 50 shirts with them in the last 2 years and am extremely happy with them. They visited my brother in law in Germany also on their visiting tailor trip and all his friends were also happy so if you need a suit made - don't waste your time - go to Excelsior.
Excelsior tailoring entails the personal attention of a cutter who measures the customer, creates and cuts a pattern, and directly supervises the making and fitting of the garment. They also use English finest fabrics and trimmings.
Some of the workmanship that I made a note of are
* Chest canvas is comprised of tightly woven horses hair covered with soft cotton for a smooth individualized fit.
* Skillfully hand-sewn sleeve open buttonholes blend smoothly into the fabric.
* Armholes are shaped by hand to ensure longer wear and to conform to the natural shape of the body. Excelsiors trademark is his skill in aligning the fabric perfectly through the armhole so it appears to be a continuous flow of fabric with no interruptions in the lines.
* Shoulder pads are individually cut and hand sewn.
* Hand-sewn pockets softly mold to the body without stiffness, double stitched for reinforcement.
* Full lining of 100% silk, cotton or silk/cotton mix is hand basted into place prior to sewing to assure conformity with body movements. It never sags even after wear and cleaning.
If you are in Bangkok keep them in mind for good tailoring rather than the touts shops
The best tailors are best to make an appointment with them so they can prepare for your visit accordingly call them for a pickup to save time and money.
The good thing is this shop has a vast range available. You can get suits as low as 150 Euros and as high as 500 Euros. It is your choice as it all depends on the fabrics you choose. I normally spend about 220 Euros per suit!
They are located opposite the Le meridien hotel in Bangkok

Like every other country in the world - shop where the locals shop and not at some backalley place whose only customers are ignorant foreign tourists. Only makes sense.
