Belize City
Housing in the cities tend to be more like that of the Caribbean islands than that found in its neighbours, Mexico, Guatemala and the Honduras.
This street scene, reminiscent of island architecture would appear quite alien in Tegucigalpa, Quetzaltenango or Mérida!
Belize's famous Swing Bridge can be seen in the background of this picture of Hawlover Creek.
Belize City has a bad reputation for street crime and drugs but it cannot be avoided as it is the hub of bus travel north and south and of ferries to the cayes (reef islands).
I was here before in 1993 with my Japanese friend Naoko and two Spanish amigos, Antonio and Alejandro. Here we are boarding a speed boat for a visit to Caye Caulker.
Dangriga
On this trip, I went north from Belize City but in '93 Naoko and I went south through Dangriga, shown here, and Punta Gorda on our way to the isolated coastal town of Livingston in Guatemala.
We found the small towns delightful with their relaxed, quiet atmosphere.
The people were friendly and talkative. It was particularly interesting to chat about the local politics with them or to read about it in the newspapers. Their approach to politics appeared much more like what I was used to in Canada than to what I had seen in other Central American countries.
Corozal
I was just going through Belize to get to Mexico on this trip so I did not take many photos and I don't have much to say about it but I'll try to compensate with this picture of the waterfront on Corozal Bay.
