On top of a steep rock of 120 meters of height is watching the city for about a millennium. It dominates "Edinburgh Castle". At 1.00 p.m. from the fortress a loud "greeting shot" is fired, every day. It can be heard far away and the people of the city switch their clocks according to this shot.Every year, in the second half of August the biggest festival of culture in the world takes place in Edinburgh. More than 2 millions of visitors from everywhere participate it regularly. The "Museum of Scotland", which is architectural very special was opened in 1999. It is worth a visit. On six floors, it gives information about the political, social and industrial development from the pre-Christian time up to today. Without a break you get from here to the "Royal Museum" that was created in the middle of the 19th century. It has got a high and very light hall of glass in a Victorian style. From it's gallery you can get to the exhibition rooms where exhibits from zoology, geology, natural, social and technical history can be found, but also art from Asia and Africa. Most of the sights of Edinburgh are situated next to each other on the "Royal Mile". It can be compared to a pearl necklace. The name of the roads comes from the fact that it is a connection between the two royal residences: "Edinburgh Castle" on it's western end and the "Palace of Holyrood" on it's eastern end.
Near the "Chapel of thistles" a statue of "John Knox" can be found, which is life-sized. "John Knox" was the reformer and dean of "St. Giles", a puritan and fanatic that is still looking for equals.
The "Holyrood Palace" was built according to plans of the Scottish architect "Sir William Bruce". Today, visitors love to explore the traces of "Mary Stuart" and every now and then the queen spends some time here. Now as well as then the short characteristic of "Sir Walter Scott" is valid. He called the Capital "my own romantic town". The real name of the city derives from the Gaelic term "Dun Eidean". This means "fortress on a hill".The "Princes Street", which is always busy can be seen as an exclusive address for a shopping tour. The classical picture of the city you get for free. On the stroll-boulevard of the Scottish metropolis exclusive shops can only be found on one side of the road. The other side is occupied by the "Princes Street Garden". During a shopping tour it can be regarded as a welcome place for a break.
