On November 8, 2003 we spent a whole day in the wonderful city of the "Elb. We exölored the old part of town by foot. The impressions we took home were the ones of the "Semperoper", the "Zwinger", the restaurated "Frauenkirche", the "Hofkirche/Cathedral" and many, many more.
Dresden is a city for walkers. The old part of town has a diameter of only 1 ˝ kilometres. The most important sights can be found very close to each other.
In the basement of the academy of the arts many museums can be visited. One of them is the "Green Vault". The name of the biggest and most valuable collection of " valuables" derives from the room in the castle where the treasures had been stored. This room was vaulted and painted in green. Many visitors are admiring the treasures that can be found in the four rooms of the "Albertinum" every day. Jewellery, jars, boxes, mirrors, clocks and sculptures of a value that is inestimable can be seen there. The highlight is the "Hofstaat of Delhi on the birthday of Aurant Zeb". This is a miracle consisting of 137 golden and coloured figures made of enamel. At the terrace of "Brühl", it is possible to stroll around. The city shows itself from it's best side. It's history is put together at this place.
After having admired the monuments of "Luther", Gothe" and "Schiller", it is also recommendable to take note of their creator. The sculptor "Ernst Rietschel" created many of the sculptures of Dresden and was also a teacher at the academy of the arts. His atelier was situated on the terrace of "Brühl", exactly at the place where his monument is standing today.
The "Hofkirche/Cathedral" (see photo in the right) is decorating the panorama of the city very much. This is due to it's ideal place. It is situated at the southern end of the bridge of "Augustus", directly next to the castle. In the evening, it is spotlighted in golden and yellow lights.
