I've finally got internet up in my room! The tech guy LITERALLY walked away two minutes ago. And here I am, posting a new entry in my journal for the sole purpose of your enjoyment, enlightenment, and overall mental well-being. How thoughtful of me!

Not long enough, obviously, but still great. She brought along her new kitten (see previous travelblog entry), which was adorable and very friendly. We were afraid for about an hour that her car had been stolen; it turned out that there are two identical parking garages at LAX international departure gate. How dare they. Liz had made me some greek/sesame seed bread (delicious) and brought presents, too! They were: A towel with a little heart she had embroidered on it, an awesome t-shirt from a Chicago jazz restaurant called "Andy's," and some pictures of herself alone as well as the two of us that she had printed out. She is ever thoughtful. We could see a few fireworks being shot off in the distance around 9:30pm. I showed her my pictures of the family from this summer in Maine for a while, but before we knew it, it was time for me to go. As I said, having Liz there before my big flight overseas and my big encounter with the unknown was heartening. My departure went smoothly and Liz and I were able to have a nice goodbye.
The flight went ok. I swapped seats to get more leg room after the first half hour, moving up to the head of my row. Sat next to a cute Aussie couple with their 15 month old boy, Austin. He and I made faces at each other for the last hour of the trip. He was very good on the flight, barely even cried. I watched a few movies, took plenty of
trips to the bathroom to stretch and splash water on my face, and tried to get sleep. A note: I was surprised by the quality of the in-flight meals, especially because I had requested the vegetarian option. A good gastronomical omen for my stay in Oz?
Wednesday, July 6th
After I arrived in Melbourne, went through customs, and met up with the rest of the Butler kids (about 35 total), I had to wait for another couple of hours for everyone else to secure their luggage, make their phones calls, etc. I called home to say hi too, of course; it was 8am for me, the fam was eating supper.
