Ecuador was my first stop in south america. it was the mid way point of my trip. i actually think i flew out of europe into ecuador exactly 6 months after i left the states. ecuador proved to be a very interesting 7 weeks of my trip. first of all, it was the smallest country i visited; yet, it was the country i spent the longest amount of time in. ecuador was the country where i did some of the most interesting stuff on my trip. however, on a day to day basis, ecuador was the slowest. perhaps this resulted from ecuador being the country where i moved off the tourist trail the most, therefore, making ecuador the country where i spent the least amount of time meeting other travelers and more time getting to know the locals. there was a fair number of nights spent cold and alone waiting for my indian jones plans to materialize.

I started off ecuador by flying into quito, a very interesting capital. it was a nice relief to leave expensive northern euorope and fly into cheap south america. my 30 min taxi ride form the airport to my hostel cost a little over
$2(US). quito was a fun stop. i started partying almost immediately after i got off the plane. i found myself a very fun hostel in the nice tourist area aptly named "gringo landia." i spent the next three days eating cheap and partying hard. i meet some very cool friends, some of whom i still talk to. i hit it off with this american from seatle. it is always interesting to meet up with an american or canadian while traveling. even if they are idiots (which is normally the case -americans are idiots and candians are dorks) it is always nice to talk to someone who understands a little slang or an inside joke. its always a riot after a while to laugh at something you haven't been able to laugh at for weeks. so me and my american friend worked off hangovers the american way: watching football and eating pizza hut. it was beautiful.
