Ecuador was my first stop in south america. it was the mid way point of my trip. i actually think i flew out of europe into ecuador exactly 6 months after i left the states. ecuador proved to be a very interesting 7 weeks of my trip. first of all, it was the smallest country i visited; yet, it was the country i spent the longest amount of time in. ecuador was the country where i did some of the most interesting stuff on my trip. however, on a day to day basis, ecuador was the slowest. perhaps this resulted from ecuador being the country where i moved off the tourist trail the most, therefore, making ecuador the country where i spent the least amount of time meeting other travelers and more time getting to know the locals. there was a fair number of nights spent cold and alone waiting for my indian jones plans to materialize.

to this little party/surf beach called montanita. i had no idea what i wanted out of ecuador (i had been partying to much to figure it out) so i said "what
the hell."

upon leaving quito i planned to stay in montanita for maybe 3 nights, max. i got stuck. i stayed for about 12 days. when day 8 came around, i told everybody i was leaving the next day. it never happened. it finally took some guy dying to get me out ... but we'll get to that in a second.
montanita consisted of one little street of hostels and bars. off this one little street was a sweet surfing beach. that was montanita. simple, small, and fun with a handful of people that wanted a good time. we would wake up at noon, get some beans and crane asada, rent a surf board and then head out to the beach. about 4pm the beer guy would roll around and we would order up a beer. then we would head back, take a shower, and start drinking around 9. some nights we would go and party on the beach, other nights we would go to the bar, other nights we would head to watch this awesome chilean jam band. it was an awesome time. i really got back into surfing and by the end of my time in montanita, my last day there the rip was strong and the locals (who acted as the life guards) told us not to go out. we were playing soccer on the beach when the next thing i know the locals spotted a tourist stuck out in the rip ... they immediately grabbed their boards and paddled out to rescue him. after a few mins the locals made it out of the water with the tourist safe. a huge group of people surrounded them in what i thought was to congratulate them on saving the day. however, after five minutes the group got larger. a few of us headed over and i was in no way prepared for what i was about to see. as the group parted i saw lying before me the tourist. he was throwing up foamy sea water and his face was a color i didn't know was possible. it was the most frightening mix of stark white and purple. everybody ...
