Up at 03:30 and Yusef was driving the 4 of us up the mountain by 04:00. Once we were as far as we could go in the van, the Italians dropped out, leaving just Lucy, in her Turkish shoes and myself, to battle the cold winds that Nemrut Dagi was throwing at us. We were ready. I had my fleece, and so did Lucy, but she was also given a blanket from Yusef
We climbed.
Now the track was quite rough, luckily, I had brought my Mag light which helped loads. I was quite amazed that there were other people walking without a torch as it was quite hard.
Once up the top, we found a position and settled down. Now it was cold. Fucking cold actually. Brass monkey material. I was sitting there, freezing my balls off, willing the sun to rise. And then it started to happen. It started to appear. My finger was frozen to the shutter button on my camera, but it did not matter as I was shooting like there was no tomorrow. All good things come to an end, and ours ended when the sun was finally all the way up. The heads were pretty impressive with the red of the sun shining on them.
Once down, Yusef drove us back to Urfa. It was the end of the trip. Yusef had been an awesome guide/driver. He never stopped telling us stories and singing to us and also, the honeydew melons he kept feeding us all day was great.
Was Sarah right about Nemrut ? Well, having been to loads of old sites over the years, it was not as impressive as I thought it would be, but I would have kicked myself if I had not gone. The sunset and sunrise were superb though, but I don't think I would be recommending the big heads of Nemrut Dagi as a must see.
