We just got back from a week in Sayulita, Mexico. Sayulita is a wonderfully relaxing little town. There are some beautiful beaches and rain forests to be seen. Do not expect any American luxeries or even English to be easily understood. This is a Mexican town where the locals go to on vacation. No resorts & no McDonalds! Which means we absolutely loved it!!! Just be ready to be awaken every morning by what sounds like thousands of roosters crowing... ;)

There are some wonderful artists in this town, although most of them are North Americans who have studios in Sayulita during the tourist season. I would also highly recommend the road kill chicken (our own nickname) and the croissants from the bread truck (10 pesos each)! The road kill chicken (7 pesos for a whole chicken!!!) is what we called the whole chickens being cooked daily on a grill in the middle of the town. It's covered in a sauce that makes it out of this world! The bread truck is a white pickup truck that drives around with all the carbs you could ever want in it(croissants, donuts, loafs of bread, etc). The day we caught them they

The only cloudy night we experienced while in Sayulita.were in the town square.

As far as restaurants we went to I can't say we had a bad experience. Most of the restaurants are actually for the rich locals & tourist, so there aren't a lot of cheap places to eat at night (after the road kill chicken is sold out for the day). There are several places that serve "argentinian pizza" (who knew pizza was argentinian), which is about the only thing that my friends 8 year old nephew would eat while in Sayulita. We enjoyed live music at Don Predro's over the weekend (they are also one of the few restaurants in town that take credit cards. Make sure you have plenty of Pesos, there are no ATM's in Sayulita!). We were told the Calypso restaurant was overpriced & not worth it. Other restaurants we enjoyed were the Sayulita Cafe, the argentinian restaurant off the square, Choco Banana (beware the bees!), Rollies (awesom Paella!!!) and the Fish Taco stand.

We stayed in a house (Casa De Las Flores) on "Gringo Hill" in an area where there are several large homes owned & rented by foreigners. There were a million stairs (ok, only 170, but it felt like a million), but it was a great location with beautiful views! The owners had a lady that took care of the place that we hired to cook dinner for us one night. For 1100 Pesos we got cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, chips, quacamole, and slasa for about 30 people (we only had 11 so we had plenty of left overs for the rest of the week).

We did a lot of hiking to isolated beaches, but were unable to find any place to snorkle because of the rockiness of the shore & the massive waves. We were told that we could take a 30 minute boat ride to an island off the neighboring town of Punta Mita. But when we got to Punta Mita we decided to go kayaking instead. Just a warning, this isn't your river kayaking or your calm ocean kayaking! Heading out into the cove was wonderful, but we were paddling like dogs to make it back to shore. We had also rented the kayak for three hours (for 250 pesos), so we went quite a ways out.

We did rent scooters one day. We drove them to Punta Mita, which was a great road for them, not too much traffic & it was a well paved road. If you plan to ride in Sayulita, I would recommend the ATV's. We tried it & it just wasn't any fun on the scooters.

And just a note, I was serious about there not being any ATM's in Sayulita. The closest place with an ATM was Pineta (about 20 minutes North of Sayulita on Highway 200). Otherwise you have to head back into Puerto Vallerta, which is 45 minutes south of Sayulita on Highway 200.
