Before we left home, we both used to race mountain bikes, and the year we left Australia, the World Mountain Bike Championships came to Cairns, Queensland. I was disappointed that I missed out, but as they were going to be in Chateau d’Oeux, Switzerland, we decided we would go there and then on into Germany. The evening we left, a friend of ours, Pinky, said she had made a dutching up kit. Grapes and such. I didn’t think much and we set off on the long drive. We had a sleep in France and then We set off again. As it is twelve hours across France, Lucy had a drive whilst I slept. When I woke up, all the grapes and other goodies had been eaten by Lucy. We drove into Switzerland and arrived at Chateau d’Oeux, and proceeded to set up our tent. Lucy was inside setting the sleeping bags up, when she asked to give her a hand. She came out, I went in, bloody hell, she had dropped her guts, and it was stinky. Pinky was going to cop a bashing when I went back to London. Bloody dutching up kit !!!!!

Lucy was pissing herself outside. Ran into a few Aussies I used to race against and watched all the races. I would loved to have reported that Cadel Evans won, but he came second and broke our hearts, but the girl who had won gold in 96, Paola Pezzo, she won. What a babe. She was walking the streets in skin tight jeans. Babe, babe, babe, babe, and she said hello to me, then Lucy hit me. It was worth it though. The amazing thing is that as mountain bike racing is so mellow, all the world champions were walking around like nobodies. At the end, Rockshox put on a party with free beer. Twist my arm and call me stupid, free training for the Oktoberfest !!!!! One sad point though was that we tried to have a cheese fondue but they had run out of fondue. Maybe next time.
