After spending a few days relaxing and using Lake Summit Lodge as our home base, we headed out to Oceanside to spend a week-end of sailing. This may very well have been the best and most relaxed week-end we've had in a long time.

After spending a few days relaxing and using Lake Summit Lodge as our home base, we headed out to Oceanside to spend a week-end of sailing. This may very well have been the best and most relaxed week-end we've had in a long time.

We spent two nights and three days on Hugh (Hollys brother) and Nickis new 42 foot Catalina sailboat, "Island Girl". Hugh and Nicki are our in-laws and devout Jimmy Buffet Parrot Heads finally living out their dream of living on a sailboat. Island Girl can accommodate and sleep up to eight persons in her spacious quarters below deck. Hugh Morgan (Hollys nephew) and his fiance Angie will join us for the sail on day three.

Day One, we just hung out on-board relaxing, swimming and taking in as much Vitamin C sunshine as our bodies would absorb. Hugh and I made our way to a local market to fetch the evenings dinner. We all had fresh grilled salmon with veggies, salad and assorted beverages - all grilled on-board by Captain Hugh.

We then went for an evenings walk around the Oceanside Harbor Marina. There is plenty to do at the marina, there is a Joe’s Famous Crab Shack that is quite popular, a Jolly Roger and various other Restaurants and plenty of music and entertainment. Back at the Island Girl we slept in one of the sleeping quarters, it was a bit claustrophobic but comfortable.

Next day, we awoke to find the Captain preparing breakfast in the galley. We enjoyed shrimp, crab meat and scrambled egg burritos, orange juice and assorted cold cereals - Ahrrrr Matey, shiver me belly!

It was then time for more swimming and kayaking around the harbor. We had so much fun, we skipped lunch and it was now time to get into the motorized dingy and putt, putt across the harbor for dinner out. We decided to eat at Dominic’s at the Harbor Pizza.

Now, if you are ever in Oceanside and hungry, you must pay Mr. Dominic a visit. He will greet you with a Big “Bon Giorno” and a smile that is at least a mile long. His Italian faire is tasty and delicious, Oh Yeah!!. If you like meatball pizza like we do, get it, it’s the best! The staff is friendly and prompt and they have an assortment of imported Italian beers to choose from. Don’t miss Dominic’s if you are ever in Oceanside, and Oh!, by the way!, if you speak some Italian tell Mr. Dominic “Al lo ha trasmesso. Ha detto che mi prendereste la cura”. He’ll be glad you did.

Day Three, it was finally time to set Island Girl to sail. There was a steady breeze brewing at about 10am, with warm weather and plenty of sunshine, just what we needed. We could not expect a better day for sailing. So we motored Island Girl out of her berth into the harbor channel and out into the open waters of the Pacific. The ocean breeze continued steady, so we cut the motor and unfurled the sails and the Island Girl cut through the water like a dolphin. Captain Hugh is one heck of a sailor. The few hours of sailing will be an event we will not soon forget. What a wonderful experience.

After the sail, we decided to visit Dominic’s once again (I’m telling you, the food is Molto squisito!), trust me on this one. After an early afternoon meal at Dominic’s, it was time to say good-bye to Oceanside and Island Girl. We made
our trek back to the Lake Summit Lodge (a.k.a. my brother Lou and Angies home) to enjoy a relaxing evening by the pool before our early morning flight back home and the daily grind. Hey!, brother, thanks for the free lodging.
