Day 24 - Monday June 7, 1999 - Angers, Plessis-Bourre, Brissac in France: I walked back across the Loire River to the AutoEurope rental car office, and presented a copy of my reservation to the clerk. He only spoke a little bit of English, and since my French is very limited we had a great time trying to communicate as he did not seem to be able to find my reservation in his "computer system", which basically consisted of several stacks of papers. Since my reservation was for 6-7-99, at one time he thought he had figured it out and informed me that my reservation was for July 6, and not June 7 since in Europe they use the dd-mm-yy format as opposed to our mm-dd-yy format. However, I disproved this theory of his when I pointed out to him at the bottom of my reservation where it stated the date as "June 6, 1999". After several more minutes of his working on his "computer system" he finally found my reservation, and gave me the keys to a beautiful green Renault Twingo. This is the smallest car that I have ever driven, but it proved to be good transportation, and I even grew fond of the little fellow as I used it the rest of the week to visit all the chateaux in the Loire Valley.
I headed out of Saumur at 9AM on road D952 heading northwest towards the town of Angers. This road runs alongside the Loire River providing a very nice scenic ride, and about an hour later I arrived in Angers. Angers is a good size city, and it is the capital of this region of France which is called Anjou. In the 12th century, the Plantagenets ruled this region, from this family came King Henry II of England, King Richard the Lion Hearted, and his brother King John of England (John Lackland). I followed the signs on the roads to the chateau, and after a few minutes I was in the parking lot in front of the chateau.
