Not sure what I did all day, but come 10:30, I was glad-ragged up, and heading down the road to The Greyhound.
It turned out to be one of those half and half pubs, where the straights watch footy and fight in the front bar, where as out the back the gays mince along to cheesy numbers, and scream with the drag queens. Just what my Sat night was in need of! The place was rammed, with a good mix of people. I got talking to some dykes, one of whome was an exPat from London who'd married an Aussie, moved over here and then eloped with her aerobics instructor. Classy.
I was sure Simon had said he was working that night, but I couldn't see him behind any of the bars, so just figured he'd got the dates wrong. A fanfare of trumpets interrupted the pop music to announce the first cabaret show of the night, and I squashed into a position down at the front of the stage to get a good view - like everybody else in there, I love a good drag act!
The queen was shockingly good, although doing that typically Aussie thing of miming along, rather than actually singing the numbers, but what was more shocking was when the two backing dancers joined her on stage wearing nothing but leopard skin trunks and some odd tribal headwear ..... and one of them was Simon!
I couldn't believe it, and couldn't stop laughing. After a few minuets charging around the stage, doing his thing, he spotted me in the crowd and gave me a knowing wink. It was so funny. After the show he joined me for a chat and some drinks, but he couldn't stay long, since he was driving and couldn't drink and had nearly an hours drive ahead of him back into the Dandenongs. It was a fun night, and I rolled back to the hostel some time in the early hours, rather hammered. Definately one venue to show the boys when they're down next week.
