So I finally took Wayne up on his invitation to join him for a week of windsurfing at Cape Hatteras. I flew in to Hamilton from Calgary and nine of us made the 15 hour road trip to Cape Hatteras. The Outer Banks is an interesting place, basically a string of islands separating Pomlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean. We stayed in a lovely "sound-side" house in Buxton on Hatteras Island. Most of our time was spent windsurfing, although you might not get that impression from the pictures.
So it was basically me and eight guys who know how to windsurf, namely the Deweerds, Tom and Rich Van Eerden, Rich Fennema, Dave Dejonge, and Dave Fennema. The winds were pretty calm for the first few days until after Wayne left (sorry about your luck Wayne), and then it got gusty. Learning to windsurf is a good challenge but I enjoyed it and Hatteras is the ideal place to learn. I started off on a floating dock with a small sail and progressed from there. The guys were nice enough to let me use their gear and stopped to give me the occasional coaching tip. The real challenge started when it

got super windy, but after a while I started getting up. Overall, I think everyone was pretty happy with the conditions. At the end of the day, we relaxed in the hot tub and had a 60-inch TV with satellite feed so we didn't even miss NHL playoffs. Now I'm trying to figure out where the windsurfing is in Alberta.
Enjoy the pics.
