We flew from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires on Christmas Eve, covering a distance of something ridiculous like 3000km and a 30 degree temperature increase. Having never had Christmas in the southern hemisphere before (or even anywhere other than my parent´s house in my case... how old am I??) it was very strange to be wearing shorts and t-shirts. We were treated to an interesting firework display at midnight. Argentinians firing fireworks out of adjacent windows in blocks of flats at other flats, cars, people, our hostel, anything available really! Added a certain edge to sitting on the hostels rooftop terrace anyway. <br />

Christmas dinner was predictably steak and red wine, at about 11pm when the temperatures had dropped a little. So really the only familiar thing about it was that we did very little.
Buenos Aires is a nice City, some areas seem very European, others very latin American. But generally it is nice and green and leafy, with lots of well kept big parks and a good atmosphere. And I didn´t suceed in convincing Scott to take tango lessons with me, so no Dirty Dancing meets Strictly Ballroom meets Natasha Kaplinsky tales to tell unfortunately....
New Year´s Eve we flew to Santiago
(about two hours of nothing but green fields across central Agentina before we got to the Andes). There was a fantastic firework display - albeit a little less exciting than the Argentinian one - in Centro at midnight. It was great, loads of people of all ages including young kids, loads of confetti, people spraying foam, people wiping foam out of their eyes, lots of champagne. We hadn´t got anything to a drink, but a guy next to us poured us both a glass of champagne. I promptly wished him a Happy Christmas - God damn Spanish continues to let me down at the most inopportune moments! After the fireworks there were bands playing etc, and as we walked back to the hostel at about 2am we were feeling pretty pleased about what a sober evening it had been. We then got back to find loads of people up having a few beers, and proceeded to do ourselves the usual mischief (it seemed unsociable to go straight to bed...).
Anyway, hope that everyone had a really good Christmas and Happy New Year!

PS. We would greatly appreciate some photos of Martin dressed as ´the only gay in the
