Days 34-38. Valdez to Seward (510km).
According to the plan we were to leave Valdez on a ferry. Because of low-season timetable we were stuck in Valdez for 2 days. Encouraged by colorful leaflets about this 'Mother Nature's favourite' spot we didn't complain for a while. After very short time though we dicovered there is totally nothing to do in Valdez, espiecally that it was raining heavily. Trying to make the most of this stay the next day we rented bikes and made a 40-mile ride to the Pipeline Terminal there and back. This was probably the worst decision of the whole journey, as it never stopped raining.
Thursday afternoon we were crossing Prince William Sound south to Cordova. The weather wasn't too bad, but still beacause of the clouds we couldn't see much. Cordova happened to be neat little fishing village, where we spent a very nice evening hanging around and consuming salmon. We pitched the tent right in the middle of the port to catch 8am ferry to Whittier. Weather was perfect and views were amazing. Snow-capped peaks right next to the ocean and great glaciers from the top to the very bottom. Whittier, which is small and boring, was founded during WWII on non-freezing waters of Prince William Sound under the glacier right between the sea and mountains. As there were mountains, to build a road and a railway they had to cut a 6-mile long tunnel.
We hitch-hiked to Girdwood where we planned to take a train next morning. In liquor store they didn't sell me a beer, because I was accompanied by Marta, who was 19. One can travel to the end of the world, face serious dangers, and 24/7 rely on no one but oneself but one can't have a beer because the law says so.
Saturday morning we were riding on Alaska Railway train from Girdwood to Seward, on the southern tip of Kenai Penninsula. It was expensive, but certainly worth it. Railway takes different route than a highway, much nicer, much more impressive.
