80s they decided it's too many people in Oregon so they moved to Alaska, where far away from civilisation they lived peacefully practising their faith. Women have to wear long dresses and headscarfs. Men grow beards at least a fist long. Men work as fishermen and boat-builders. Women concentrate on delivering children, usually around a dozen of them.
In 1985 a discussion commenced between two parts of a village. The issue was a minor detail regarding the form of prayer. It heated up a little to much so that houses were burning, somebody killed his wife, a church burned down, and US Army had to step in to manage the situation. Since then community separated and two villages do not sustain any relations.
Katchemak Selo is a more conservative one. Only a big pick-up with strong engine can get there provided the weather is fine. A road is steep and twisting, and of course unmaintained. Before the village sings say visitors are not welcome. Indeed, the people are not willing to talk to us, however the children in priamary school are. We also had nice conversation with two teachers, Americans. It seemed people in this village simply do not enjoy modern style of living and want to have peace and quiet. As they have no communication with outer world stereotypes and myths build up.
Next day we went to Nikolaevsk, where we were more lucky. People in Nikolaevsk are more open, but this doesn't mean they are welcoming. Contrary to Katchemak community they accept marriages with counterparts from outside of the church. They also let toursits come and take some photos of the church, even the priest was willing to talk for couple of minutes. But this is far too little to learn anything about the community. Where we really got into Oldbelievers is in Anita's place. Anita is old American lady, who by chance happened to live inside Russian community. She is full of positive energy as well as her two dogs, who treat visitors as big toys made especially for them
