Days 24-27. Alaska border to Denali (830km).
Top of the World Highway leads through a very interesting country, with a very relaxing landscape. We pass couple of dredges that reminded of the famous past, when Klondike Gold Rush moved west to fund Alaska Gold Rush. The town of Chicken is also nothing, but a gold rush. Formerly it was called Ptarmingan, the name of some kind of wild, big birds, that used to nest in the area. When gold prospectors came, they neither knew what ptarmingan is, nor couldn't pronounce it properly. 'If it's some kind of bird, why don't we call it chicken?'. And this is how the town of Chicken got its name.
We made it to Tok, where Top of the World Highway meets Alaska Highway, then to Delta, which is the formal end of the latter. Our first evening in the USA was very nice, as Americans in a bar turned out to be very hospitable, and would buy us a beer after another, as we still had only Canadian money.
On Sunday September 2nd we got to Fairbanks. We visited university campus, downtown and a Creamer's Field, which is a vast green area in a middle of the town, where hundreds of birds take their time to rest. Very interesting, quite unusual place. Besides, there is a muskox farm in Fairbanks. Muskox are most norhternly living animals on earth. Moreover, they are active all year round, they don't hibernate like polar bears. Maybe that's why they look so strange (see pictures!).
However impressive Fairbanks might have been, our minds were occupied by one concern; what's happening to Marcell? The engine sounded strange, and it eventually stopped running. After few hours of break, it started again, but only for five minutes. We had stop for a night in Fairbanks. The next day we repacked everything, and prepared to split into two groups to hitch-hike in case Marcell didn't run. At 3pm we took a chance and Marcell started. We made 100 miles in 13 hours.
