In the evening we visited a village of Eklutna, where Natives (Aleutians) still practice christian Orthodoxy, the faith that was brought to their ancestors by Russian missionairies three hundred years ago. With two more rides we made it to Matanuska Glacier. Campground was completely deserted. September is the end of season in Alaska, and everything closes down. The positive thing about it, is that there is virtually no tourists this time of the year. All those beatiful landscapes turned red and yellow, as it's middle of the Fall, so Alaska lookes like paradise. The only difference might be weather and temperature. In paradise it's warm and doesn't rain.
Next day we hitch-hiked maybe three minutes, and the first auto that stopped tookes us all the way to Chitina, 150 miles. Dave, the driver, was old, bold and very lively. He told us hundreds of incredible stories, including this one about a party with whiskey and cigarettes a day before final ascent to McKinley peak back in 1970s. We stopped for a lunch in his friend's place in Glenallen. In Chitna we changed to RV with Germans, who were going to our destination - McCarthy. It's 60 miles from Chitina to MacCarthy on a very bad gravel road. A ride in RV, where hundreds of little things jumping up and down a few times a second was simply driving me mad.

Our main plan was to do 8-10 day trekking in Wrangell Mountains. The route was planned according to maps from 1950s (the only existing maps of that area). However, we didn't know much about transportation and salvation services as well as about weather conditions this part of the year. In McCarthy we realized our route is simply impossible to do.
