Days 12-15. Mount Robson PP to Yukon border (2260km).
Mount Robson is the highest peak in Canadian Rockies. Canadians would tell you it's in the northern part of the range. In fact, it's not even in the middle, being still in more to the south. That's because Mount Robson Provincial Park in the most norhternly point in the Rockies accesible by road. Behind, thousands of rocky peaks, and awesome lakes, hundreds of kilometers of a country ruled by moose and grizzlies. For now, we had to confine to a dream to see this country one day in a future.
Handbook of Canadian Rockies says last two weeks of September bring the best weather to climb and see Mount Robson. Certainly not today. A photo with a bunch of clouds and we were on our way to Prince Rupert. Not only the steam was coming out of engine, but the driver's chair started to work like a cradle. This was neither comfortable nor safe. Some few hours lost in Valemount, but in the end the chair worked just fine. For some time at least.
Prince George is the a geometric centre of British Columbia. Though, the university there is named University of Northern British Columbia. That's because 90% of Canadians live within 100miles from US border. Their perception of their homeland's geography is so much different from what the map says. They would say Canada has 10 provinces. Our destination, Yukon, one of the three territories that lie behind 60th parallel is for them a part of a completely different world. Arctic Canada.
We drove across hilly country, mostly uninhabited, with mountains and hills, lakes and streams, woods and grasslands. These grasslands indicate that we were no more in the Rockies. The landscape was completely different here. Calm and green. Empty and welcoming.
Francois Lake is nothing to decribe as 'awesome' or 'stunning'. It's just a long narrow lake in the middle of this magic country. But somehow I regret
