200km behind Arctic Circle. To drive Dempster Hwy itself one can call life adventure. It crosses two mountain ranges: Ogilvie Mts and Richardson Mts. Besides, it's two days driving through tundra, unbelievably colorful this part of the year. How beatiful and magical this country is, pictures will show better than I can describe. However, the pictures wouldn't show calmness, quietness and extra-large scale of those empty spaces.
It doesn't need much explanation what 1500km of gravel means for overweighted car. In our case it meant three flat tires, a hole in exhaution and broken side window (a stone from the tires of speeding truck). We had pretty funny story with an Eskimo mechanic in Inuvik, who tried to sell us broken tire. He tried to convience us that a whizz of air coming out of tire he just sold us is in fact totally different sound coming from the garage. Then he suggested we take this tire, and if anything goes wrong we come back next day. After couple of such ridiculous ideas we lost patience and went to talk to the boss.
We tried to spend evening in Mad Trappers Pub, but Eskimo's ability to sing is strongly questionable. On return way we visited Indian village of Tsigetchik (for sure didn't spell it right). Tsigetchik is situated on escarpment above the place where Arctic Red River meets Mackenzie. Finding a gas station there, which surerly exist villagers said, would be a challenging quest even for Indiana Jones. One night we looked at Northern Lights again, the other evening we catched some fish at last!
After leaving Dempster Highway we had to clean Marcell. We crossed the mighty Yukon on a ferry. Then we tried to fish again, not being even slightly lucky. The Top of The World Highway took us to American border, to Alaska. In the winter traffic is prohibited, because of the lack of pavement in say half the distance. The country there is more hilly than Dempster. We went up and down time and again. No trees, tundra full of colors.
