In Watson Lake we visited Signpost Forest - a few thousand signs from around the world. A very interesting place. Whitehorse is not very impressive, but we really enjoyed a visit to SS Klondike, a steamboat that used to take prospectors to Klondike goldfields. The funny story is how they moved the ship from one side of the town to where it stands now. It was back in 70s. They couldn't put the ship back in the river, because the wood was too old and too dry and would collapse when wet. Instead, they figured to spill seven tons of laundry powder on streets and simply pushed the ship along slippery streets.
Before a visit to Whitehorse we ate breakfast on a viewpoint over a canyon on Yukon River. After, we relaxed for some time in hot springs. Although it was end of August it didn't get dark before midnight. Another beatiful place we saw was Five Finger Rapids on Yukon River, the most dangerous place on a route to Klondike, where in Gold Rush times lots of would-be prospectors drowned.
Before we got to Dawson City we took a detour to visit Silver Coutry. In the area around villages of Mayo and Keno until 50s silver was mined on a large scale. Now these places are almost deserted. We are too far north for any trees to grow. Open, empty spaces were trurly impressive. Mountains here reach 2000m, but are vast, massive and smooth, with neither snow nor rocks. They were so much different from Rockies, Coast Mountains and anything we had ever saw before. It was middle of Fall there, and the country was screaming with reds and yellows. Not many trees though, as we were too far north. On top of Keno Hill we took lunch break. We could see about hundred kilometers every direction. We saw clouds and sun, rain falling somewhere far away, weather changing. But we could hear almost nothing. It was so unbelievably quiet there!
We would probably see nothing that day if not a lady from Moose Creek, one of the very few inhabited places between Whitehorse
