It is even smaller village, with no paved road, looking like no improvements have been done here since it was built hundred years ago. Hyder lies in a different country, USA. Border divides the inlet. These two little villages at the end of the world, 400km away from the nearest civilisation are divided by a state border!
In Hyder there is a place, where bears love to fish for salmon. Tourist information said lots have been seen lately. On our way we had to cross the border, but Americans didn't really care, and the only thing indicating that we are in United States was the lack of pavement on the road. On the other side Canadians defend themselves against illegal immigrants, so on the way back we had to show passports and visas. The only problem was that they were hidden deep in a baggage. It took us 10 minutes to unpack the trunk and find documents. Then is took half an hour to pack it back, but the trunk wouldn't close no matter what.
In the stream behind Hyder we spotted tons of salmon. However, no grizzlies were interested. A little disappointed we decided to turn back, when one small and definetely lost black bear appeared on the road.
The road was somewhat mysterious. We'd already passed Hyder and there's totally nothing apart from the village. Then where does it go to? We decided to figure it out. The quality of the road was horrible and we couldn't run faster than 30km/h. After passing old mine the road takes steep ascent. One hour later we faced an abolutely breathtaking view, a glacier, a gigantic highway made of ice and snow before our eyes. It was totally unbelievable.
On the way back we could practice how to change a tire for the first time. It wouldn't bare this dirty gravel and simply exploded.
It's one more full day driving north Highway 37 to cross Yukon border.
